For a watch to be considered as a Grande Complication timepiece takes at least three standard complications (one of those that measure relatively short intervals of time, such as different types of chronographs; one for astronomical events, such as Moon phases or, say, Equation of Time that tells current differential between the solar and official local time; and one for striking complications, like different kinds of minute repeaters or alarms)
Unlike last year’s $2.5 million Hybris Mechanica Grande Sonnerie watch with 26 complications, the new Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition Grande Complication is not so exclusive, but, sporting only three standard complications, rotating flying tourbillon measuring the Sidereal Day, a minute repeater with JLC’s new trebuchet hammers, as well as a zodiac calendar, month and a 24-hour indicator, powered by the highly complex hand-wound JLC Calibre 945 movement, which is made of 527 parts . All components are decorated with sunburst pattern, circular graining, double sailing or are satin brushed to enhance the classical aspect of the construction. The steel parts are polished and beveled, the adjustment screws blued and the screws for the settings are rhodium plated. Looking on the dial side of the watch however, another spectacular aspect of this Grand Complication can be admired: here the whirling tourbillon is outfitted with the high-tech escapement components which have the dark shimmer of silicium contrasting well to the highly polished silvery titanium grade 5 tourbillon cage.
Honoring the exclusivity of the movement, which is so complex and the interactions between its three complications so delicate that the whole mechanism has to be assembled by one single master watchmaker. While a sapphire glass in the back allows one to lovingly examine the finely finished movement, the front is covered by a domed sapphire glass and a sloping bezel, which underlines the classical look of the watch and provides the 44millimeter diameter watch with a pleasing design, concealing its thickness of 15.6 millimeters.
